This my reflection on sports camp on september 18. We are learning to use adjectives to describe a past activity.
Sports Camp
It was a scorching hot morning and our nerves filled our bodies because we were off to sports camp. Our most anticipated week of the year with excitement so indescribable. We headed off deep into the depths of hunua where we ended up in Camp Adair. A massive campsite that an athlete could only dream of. To your right is a wobbly bridge over a rapid river that takes you to a 100 meter rugby field in perfect condition. And towering over it was a gigantic hill holding a mountain biking track! On the other side of the camp there was a full basketball court that was indoor! It was also used to hold ceremonies at the end of each day. There were three lodges: the blue lodge (main Lodge), red lodge and green lodge. These are where all of the cabins live and only the blue and red lodges were used.
So we headed off to our first sport, it was Ki O’Rahi. A sport that is filled with variety and a spectacular sport all around. An announcer deafeningly muffled into the megaphone “coming up for the first game is Edmund Hillary School versus St Trinity”. All the nerves, excitement and pressure gave us all mixed emotions. We went out with our strongest team and surprisingly enough we managed to pull off an upset, winning 12 points to 2.We were so happy that we won and all of us were filled with joy. And we headed off to our next game winning against Kauri Flats school but in a slightly closer game being 14 to 8. Now the excitement really got to us. We felt so unstoppable and the confidence was really building up. But little did we know one of our hardest games was up next. It was Conifer Grove School. They were a very tough competition for us. We started off with a bang being up 5 points to 2 at the end of the first half. But the second half was the hardest one yet they started winning 11 points to 8. But surely enough we tied it up right back to 11 to 11 and the timer gradually counted down “5…4 … .3…2…1”. The megaphone sounded,it was game over. But it was a draw? The referee said that there will be a golden point meaning that whoever scores first wins. The other team started with the ball but surely enough we got an intercept and took it to the middle. We were shooting and shooting but missing their goalies were unmatched. We passed and passed until the ball got to one of our teammates when he shot it snuck in between the legs of the goalie bounced off of a cone and barely hit the goal just enough for the referee to see. We all were jumping everywhere so happy and filled with joy. But the hardest game was yet to come. We were now versing Papakura Normal! By far the toughest competitors. We started off not knowing what was coming. They were very experienced at the game unlike us and we unfortunately lost 14 points to 12. We were heartbroken but still learnt from our mistakes and are still on our feet
It was the mightiest and most bone chilling morning. The coldest gust of wind hit me and sent goosebumps up my arms and the mist looked like thunder clouds rolling throughout the camp. But eventually the sun shone through the clouds and instantly changed the temperature. We set off on our journey over the wobbly bridge till we ended up at two fully set up tag fields! The nerves set in as the schools huddled up and the referees were all explaining the rules for Kiwi Tag which is a non contact sport which is a sport exactly the same as rugby league but with tags stuck to your shorts that you rip instead of tackling. This was one of my favorite sports because of the result we got that was amazing. So it kicked off with Edmund Hillary Vs St Trinity which were new to this sport so we had one of the easiest games of this winning 8 points to 1 which is the biggest winning margin for the whole sport! We were so pumped and excited, so unexplainably spectacular but we couldn’t let our win distract us from the more difficult games coming up. Our next challengers were Kauri Flats. An unexpectedly skilled team that we definitely underestimated and they took advantage of us and caught us off guard as the scoreboard shows losing 5 points to 6. We were disappointed with our loss but our lesson was learnt as there was still a chance for third place rewarded with a bronze medal. We sorted out our lineup to the best of our ability to make sure that we secure victory in our battles. We started off with a BOOM getting to points within the same minute. This game was very close, nobody scored for a while until we answered by scoring an amazing point on the sideline and right on the fulltime buzzer the team was desperate to score but we were not gonna let that happen. As they were passing the ball along the line we INTERCEPTED THE BALL! He ran and he ran as the other team closed on us. We eventually got caught but shortly led to a point!! We were so delighted that we had to celebrate.
The scorching sun burnt through the glass. The sweat was dripping down everyone’s body’s. But we weren’t gonna let that block us from becoming victorious. We ventured off to the field yet again where we were preparing to play rugby league. Which is personally my favorite sport because of the thrill and adrenaline you get. The referees explained the rules yet again and we head off starting off against Papakura Normal School. The best competition against us started off winning 20 to 10 but soon our excitement took control of our actions and soon led to our loss being 26 to 20. We stayed on our feet as there was still a chance for second place. Our next game was against St Trinity which are real beginners to this sport so we had to take it easy on them but we still ended up winning 30 to 6. After a long wait the game most anticipated was up next we were gonna verse Kauri Flats. A school that is especially skilled in this sport but we were very confident. First we got the ball. We were running hard and fast aiming for the trie line and that benefited us as we went on to win 8 points to 0. Our next game was definitely the easiest because they had no experience with the sport. It was Holy Trinity. We had to take it easy on them so they could learn how to play and also beat there opponents. But we still ended up winning 30 points to 0.
